We women are highly skilled at prioritizing everything and everybody before we prioritize ourselves, be it work, family or anything in between and then to top it off we generally downplay our accomplishments. Not surprising really as this behavior has been nurtured in us since… well the beginning of time. In fact, I think it is because it is so ingrained in our female identify that non-conforming women blatantly stand out and are often judged for that very reason.
In recent years I have started a personal tradition; my annual selfebration day! Each year on my birthday I take the day off work, I suppress my guilt and I very consciously resist my fundamental urge to getting things done around the house. I resist because my selfebration day is for pure self-focused leisure and reflection.
I reflect on what I have accomplished in the last year and map out my personal goals for the year ahead. I identify opportunities for growth and I explore learnings from past failures and mistakes without lingering. See my Thoughtless post if you tend to drift into rumination during such exercises. This year a dear friend of mine is even getting a sitter so we can have a long kid free lunch together. I can’t wait!
So ladies break with the norm and selfebrate away because you are amazing!
